Welcome

Thanks for visiting our blog. Who is Funico you might ask? In short, we are:

Husband-and-wife led team. Award-winning New York wedding photographers and videographers. Creative. Reliable. Trusted.

Our names are actually Alice & James Thompson, not Alice & James Funico (though we've gotten mail addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Funico!) We created the word "funico" because we wanted a name that people would remember and something that includes the word "fun" in it. Your wedding is a celebration and all parts of it should be FUN!

We started photographing weddings in 2004 and have loved it ever since. As demand for our services grew, we built a small team of photographers and videographers who share our passion. As photographers, we will capture the essence of your wedding day with candid photojournalism, fine art portraits and our unique style of "fine art photojournalism." At the same time, our videographers will provide a cinematic video for you to enjoy and relive for years to come.

Our goal is to anticipate and capture the smiles from the heart, the spontaneous gestures of love, and the rhythm of your celebration.

To see more of our work or to inquire about photography or videography, give us a call at (646) 234-8927 or send us an e-mail at team@funicostudios.com. Look forward to chatting with you!

Lu & John’s Wedding at Paramount Country Club, NY

They met at a golf course in Beijing so appropriately, Lu & John got married at a golf course.  For their festivities, the happy couple chose the stunning Paramount Country Club (formerly Dellwood Country Club) in Rockland County, New York.  This is our favorite photo from the day.  Look at how lovely this place is with its gorgeous stone walls!

Below is a sneak peek of images from the wedding.  Fun wedding with games to prove how much John wants to marry Lu, a funky first dance, a casino cocktail hour and a hip hop singing groom – what a day to remember for their friends & family!  It started to pour during their formal portrait session, but with a bit of speedy photo-taking and adjusting for the weather, voila, the newlyweds can still have pictures that capture the country club’s beautiful grounds.  Congrats again to the new Mr. & Mrs. John Hong!

Karina and Ryan’s Engagement Photos in Central Park, New York City

Yes, we know it’s Summer. Why are we blogging about photos taken in the Spring? We’ve been so busy shooting weddings and have neglected our blog readers. Before posting some recent stuff, we just have to share some fun engagement photos in Central Park taken during our Spring Photo Fling event. These were mini engagement sessions we offered in the park to celebrate the arrival of Spring.

After a week of rain, Karina & Ryan were ready get out into the park and have some fun taking photos. Our first stop was at the Conservatory Water in Central Park. It’s often called the Central Park Boat Pond since it’s full of radio controlled sailboats.

The pond holds a special place in our hearts because it’s also where we got engaged. If you’re in the area, we highly recommend getting something to eat at Knish Nosh right by the pond. Little outdoor cafe with the best stuffed cabbage we’ve ever had! Nothing like a little stuffed cabbage and beer while enjoying such a great view. If you go though, go early since the cafe gets very busy when the weather is nice and they usually sell out of the stuffed cabbage by early afternoon.

This first photo of Karina & Ryan has an old-fashioned look & feel but a few high tech tricks were used to get the final product. We actually took 5 pictures and combined them into one image. First, a high speed flash sync was used to balance the sunlight while still getting a pleasing out-of- focus background. Notice that their heads are in focus while the rest of the photo is out of focus. Then, several other photos were taken quickly after the first picture. All the images were then merged together to capture the dark areas in the trees while still showing the details in the bright sky. The final product is called a High Dynamic Range (HDR) photograph.

We also ventured off the beaten path to capture a section of Central Park that was exploding in green colors after a week of rain.  What a wonderful spot with long grass and wonderful sunlight coming though the trees! Do you feel like you are spying on their moment in their secret little oasis?

To Karina & Ryan – we had a great time taking photos of you and showing you a few hidden treasures in Central Park.  Looking forward to being a part of your wedding at the Waterside Restaurant in New Jersey next year!

David & Danny’s Wedding at The Manor, West Orange, NJ

Same sex marriage is now legal in New York – many congrats to the gay & lesbian community!  Before the law passed though, we had actually already photographed a few lesbian and gay weddings.   David & Danny was our most recent happy couple.

And what a memorable couple they are.  Not only are they unbelievably handsome, they’re 2 of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

Of course, this wonderful couple would also have a fun wedding party to match.  We know this wedding party better than most since we also photographed the weddings of 2 of the people in the pictures below.  You know what they say – birds of a feather flock together and this is certainly true here since all 3 couples have been so great.

Danny & David’s ceremony was one of the most touching we’ve seen.  Beautiful and with straight-from-the-heart vows that caused a lot of tears to fall.

Their wedding reception at the Manor in New Jersey started off with a bang.  David used to be a choreographer, so their first dance was full of eye-popping moves.

The couple’s friends & family were also not shy about using the dance floor.  We did “dancing group portraits” with them so that they could get a few posed shots with their friends in a fun way.

Some lovely toasts to honor and to entertain…

…and then back to more flipping, jumping and floor-thumping dancing.  The Manor actually raised the room’s chandelier to accommodate the rockin’ party!

Many congrats again to David & Danny.  Here’s to a lifetime of loving & laughing! See you in September at Danny’s nephew’s wedding (and many thanks for recommending us)!

A Little Editing Makes a Big Impact

We are proud members of the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association (AGWPJA).   What is the AGWPJA?  It’s a great organization that recognizes photographers who blend their photojournalist talents with creative post-production skills.  We’re not big believers in “photoshopping” images, but we do think that sometimes, a little editing can go a long way to enhance a great moment.

Being such minimalists with our photo editing, we were pleasantly surprised when the AGWPJA honored 3 of our photos with awards in their first quarter contest.  That makes us the most-awarded AGWPJA photographers in the country  for 2011.   That’s a nice way to start out the year!

One of the winning images was a portrait taken in the Tuscan Garden at Celebrate at Snug Harbor in Staten Island.  Kristina & Dan got married at Snug Harbor on 04/02/11.  With the recent heat wave, I’m sure we’ve all forgotten how cold the Spring was.  The snow had melted just in time for Kristina & Dan’s big day, but unfortunately, the flowers and trees hadn’t bloomed yet.  With the right perspective, however, Mother Nature can be beautiful, regardless of the weather.  We had a happy couple and some sun, sky, water and trees.   That might not sound like much, but after a little editing to bring out the clouds and a change in the color tone to complement the setting, we had a winning combination!

The other two winning images were candids from an Egyptian wedding at the Valley Regency in Clifton, New Jersey.  As you can see, the groom was enjoying the ride much more than the bride.

Like most other cultures, Mona & Wael and their friends & family celebrated with lots of dancing.  We captured the celebration and changed the colors a bit to enhance the look of these images.

Weddings are full of great moments.  And with just a little bit of editing, these moments can look even more magical.

It’s always an honor to have our work recognized.  But the real reward comes from our couples when they tell us how much they love their wedding photos.  To all of our happy couples – thanks so much for entrusting us to capture your special day!
